(OTC/BB: AKES) today announced that current president and chief operating officer, Carl LeBel, Ph.D., has been appointed to the role of president and chief executive officer. Dr. LeBel has served as president and chief operating officer since June 2008 and has been on the Akesis’ board of directors since December 2007.

Akesis Pharmaceuticals Expands Preclinical Safety Program for Lead Product

SAN DIEGO (September 22, 2008) – Akesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTC/BB: AKES), an emerging diabetes drug-development company, today announced the initiation of the next phase of the preclinical safety program for AKP-020. While an analysis of the one-month preclinical safety studies is ongoing, the company has initiated a three-month preclinical safety program in order to support further clinical evaluation of its product. Combined with the thorough analysis of the recent Phase IIa study of AKP-020 in diabetic subjects, the company anticipates a delay in the next phase of clinical studies where the next human study would not begin until the second half of 2009, following appropriate regulatory feedback.

SAN DIEGO (July 18, 2008) – Akesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OTC/BB: AKES), an emerging metabolic disease drug development company, today announced it has appointed Christos Mantzoros, MD, DSc, to its scientific advisory board (SAB). Dr. Mantzoros is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Professor in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. He serves as the Clinical Research Overseer of the Division of Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Scholars in Clinical Science Program, a postgraduate clinical investigators training program at Harvard Medical School.
